People have never had to turn a hobby into some sort of sporting event, and Blizzard’s long-running MMO game World of Warcraft is no exception. The main events of the WoW esports calendar, Mythic Dungeon and Arena, will be completed in a few weeks. Mythic Dungeon International (MDI) will host the finals from July 8-9 and the Arena World Championship (AWC) from July 16-17. However, it is not just about passive navigation.

To entice viewers, Blizzard has announced that WoW players who link their Blizzard accounts to their YouTube accounts will receive an achievement and in-game title for watching the ending. The name “Intrepid Spectator” will definitely be fun to use when browsing group quest instances.

MDI is an unusual esports show. The best PvE groups from around the world compete to see who can complete the highest mythic keystone dungeon in the shortest amount of time. The league is organized as a series of three group stages, with two teams from each tournament qualifying for the final and then battling it out for the final two places. Echo and Baldy took the win in Group A, MONKA and Perplexed in Group B, and Donuts & Despair and Sloth in Group C. LONG MING and W Omegalul went through the Last Stand.

The Finals is an 8-team, 14-match knockout tournament with a $300,000 prize pool.

AWC is a more traditional PvP esports format where eight of the best Arena teams from around the world compete in a round robin league. The top teams will qualify for the tournament playoffs later this month. Currently the leaderboard is led by Kungarna on the European servers with 7 wins and Kawhi on the US side also with 7. The AWC prize pool is a bit richer with a total of $700,000 up for grabs per season.
