You probably don’t think most mods have live seasons, but for the ambitious Project Diablo 2 mod, it’s an important part of its presentation. The original Diablo II mod from 2000 released its first season in November 2020. It was designed to breathe new life into an RPG like it was still being actively maintained, and that’s certainly a good way to go. time before the Diablo 4 release date.
Project Diablo 2’s primary mission is to “maintain the Lord of Destruction experience and provide consistent rating resets while improving the game as if development never stopped.” The mod includes many item rebalancings, new end-game content, useful quality of life improvements, and increased potential build diversity.
Project Diablo 2 seasons typically last around four months, although a little longer has passed since the release of Enlightenment’s fourth season. Some of the big changes and highlights in Season 5 include a new market, quick spells, upgrade timers, improved monster targets, a DPS meter, shared pools for your characters, and a new “friendly” farming boss called uber. Unfortunately, this mod only works for the original Diablo II and is not playable in Diablo II: Resurrected. This means you’re stuck with the previous resolution and frame rate, even though the development team says that the shaders used should allow the game to be upscaled to 4K without affecting gameplay.
If Diablo Immortal has given you loot cravings and you’ve already found all those hidden lairs, Project Diablo 2 might be the perfect way to catch up on the history of the series. Or maybe you just don’t want to convert all your WoW gold into Diablo microtransactions.
