Cold weather increases risk of injury from exercise

With the onset of cold weather, exercise becomes more of a challenge: the body demands more from our metabolism to stay warm, and muscle stiffness tends to increase. However, maintaining movement and performing a warm-up before starting sports is essential to avoid the risk of muscle injury.

According to Faculdade Anhanguera’s physical education course coordinator, Prof. Audrey Fortunato Michelote, the most common problems at this time of year are muscle strains and strains, especially in the lower extremities (thighs, shins, ankles and feet). “In autumn and winter, warming up the body becomes even more important, as it takes time to achieve the necessary flexibility for an ideal range of motion in cold temperatures,” he explains.

The scientist emphasizes that the frequency of cardio-respiratory activity increases during the warm-up, which stimulates blood circulation and prepares the muscles for intense exercise. “To find the perfect time to start exercising, just watch your breathing and heartbeat. If they are higher compared to the rest period, then you can start,” explains the professor. “The preparation should be gradual so as not to demand too much from the cold body and avoid injuries and deletions,” he continues.

To warm up your body, just set aside 10 minutes before any sport. The habit is able to increase the mobility of the joints and the rate of energy release in the body, in addition to ensure the exchange of oxygen in hemoglobin and accelerate nerve impulses that facilitate movement. “This step is necessary to achieve results without compromising health,” concludes Michelote.

For people who do not often play sports, the teacher warns to be aware of factors such as physical fitness before engaging in sporadic activities such as football matches or weekend walks. “Before starting these activities, it is recommended to consult with a physical education specialist, and in cold weather or in open areas with wind, it is important to protect yourself with warm clothes for thermal comfort,” he concludes.
