Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 remaster planned but canceled

None other than Tony Hawk himself has confirmed that there are “plans” to remake Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4. However, breaking the hearts of millennials everywhere, he says the skateboard games were canceled after Vicarious Visions, the studio that made the well-received THPS 1+2 remakes, merged with Blizzard in April.

The legendary figure skater just talked about it in a live stream that came to us via Okami Games on Twitter. Host Andy ‘andyTHPS’ Gentile, whose gaming prowess led him to work at original developer Neversoft after graduating high school and then Vicarious Visions to work on the new 1+2 version, says, “If there are 3 and 4, you know how to contact me”.

“I mean, that was the plan,” Hawk replies. “Even before the release date [1+2]we were 3 + 4. And then Vicarius seemed to get carried away, and [Activision] looking for other developers, then it was all over.

Interestingly, we may have a completely new and different name for THPS. Gentile and Hawke played remakes of THPS 1+2 live to an audience, one of which prompts another tidbit from Hawke: “The truth is that [Activision] They tried to find someone to do 3+4, but they didn’t trust anyone, like Vicarious, so they took other offers from other studios, like “What would you do with the THPS name?” And they just didn’t like everything they heard, that’s all.”

These days, sports games other than FIFA or Madden rarely become popular, but millennials’ obsession with extreme sports has brought many such hits, of which Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater was arguably the biggest. A series of truly amazing skateboarding games with alternative rock soundtracks, it was a true cultural moment that still lives fondly in the memories of millions of gamers from the 2000 era. The remakes of the first two games have done a great job capturing and enhancing their spirit and they were a great nostalgic surprise for Fall 2020 – here’s our take on them.

The news that 3+4 won’t get the same treatment isn’t surprising given the acquisition of Vicarious, now known as Blizzard Albany, and the complete absence of announcements. But it still hurts to know that it was planned and then cancelled.

Get comfortable watching andyTHPS remakes live on Twitch. His channel trailer is backed by Tony Hawk, who says he got the job at Neversoft because his skills blew up social media before it existed.
