The NVIDIA RTX 4000 rumor mill has been doing the rounds for several months now, with countless reports that upcoming GPUs will likely consume power to consume it. This rise in consumption doesn’t seem to be limited to gaming PCs: Team Green graphics cards for gaming laptops also seem to have a bigger appetite for watts.
Nvidia’s flagship RTX 4000 series GPU, the AD102, which will likely be used in the RTX 4090, will be capable of consuming up to 800W. kopite7kimi. That’s nearly double the 450W power limit set by the company’s best graphics card right now, the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.
Real. Power limits:
AD102, 800W;
AD103 (DT), 450W, AD103 (Mobile), 175W;
AD104 (DT), 400W, AD104 (Mobile), 175W;
AD106 (DT), 260W, AD106 (Mobile), 140W.
But I don’t think we need to use all the power.– kopite7kimi (@kopite7kimi) June 18, 2022
Moving down the stack, this trend continues with the AD103, AD104, and AD106 GPUs, with a minimum wattage of 260W and a maximum of 450W. All of this means that when choosing an RTX 4080, RTX 4070, or RTX 4060, you may need one of the best power supplies out there.
Power limits don’t seem that important for mobile devices: most RTX 4000 graphics cards for gaming laptops consume as much power as their current RTX 3000 equivalents. However, any laptop with an AD104 processor will require 10W more than a GPU GA103. . .
It’s not yet clear how these increased power restrictions will help or hinder NVIDIA’s ability to compete with video cards, but it looks like Team Green will be first to market, despite reports of delays. Although it will be even longer before we can buy RTX 4000 laptops.
