AMD Mendocino APU benchmarks lag far behind Steam Deck

The Steam Deck is undoubtedly a big hit in the gaming laptop market, but that hasn’t stopped competitors from trying to hit its lowest price point with devices like the Ayaneo Air Plus that use AMD Mendocino APUs. However, benchmarks for the yet-to-be-announced AMD Ryzen 7000 processor indicate that Valve’s custom APU potentially has a somewhat comfortable performance advantage.

Referring to the results found in Userbenchmark (via Tum_Apisak), the AMD Ryzen 3 7320U looks a bit like the custom silicon found on steam bridge. For example, both processors feature four cores and eight threads on top of the 2.4GHz base frequency. It’s unclear if it’s also built on the Zen 2 architecture, but it would be surprising given that we expect the Ryzen 7000 series to be in its most Zen 4 processors.

Although AMD is building this new Mendocino CPU on its new microarchitecture, it probably won’t be able to match the Steam Deck in gaming tests due to less powerful integrated graphics. The Ryzen 3 7320U only has two RDNA 2 compute units compared to the Valve PDA’s eight, giving the latter a significant advantage.

However, it’s impossible to say how the Ayaneo Air Plus, or any other device using this “Mendocino” APU, will perform against the Steam Deck in any application, let alone gaming. We’ll have to wait and see when the company finally introduces its best lineup of gaming processors later this year.
