Polish developers 11 Bit Studios, creators of Frostpunk and This War of Mine, have unveiled their new sci-fi game The Alters, in which the protagonist Ian creates alternate versions of himself, whose unique personalities are shaped by their different paths of life. potential lives.
In the promotional trailer, a man wakes up in a bunk on a space station and then heads to the crew quarters, where several characters are huddled around a spacesuit-clad corpse lying on a table. As the camera pans, we see that the costumed figure has the same face as the first man. As he begins to panic, the other characters turn on him, revealing that they, too, resemble him, but with different hairstyles and body hair.
The camera then pans to show everything happening in one container, crammed together with many others inside a giant wheel rolling across a dusty gray planet. Lead artist Tomasz Kisilewicz explains that protagonist Jan creates these “quirks,” unique versions of himself with his own traits and abilities, to help him on his journey.
Kisilevich says that the central theme of the game is how people shape themselves every day, every decision they make. While this process of becoming who we are can be painful, he says, Jan has the unique ability to reshape himself multiple times with each change he creates. The game takes advantage of systematic non-linear design and elements of horror, mysticism, surrealism, and classic science fiction.
