If you’re still a little bummed about Firaxis’ new strategy game, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Nope XCOM 3, so don’t worry: the studio hasn’t forgotten about the sci-fi series. But according to franchise senior producer Garth DeAngelis, his new tactical RPG from Marvel was “too good” an opportunity to pass up.
“We just had this opportunity that brought us to our knees,” DeAngelis said. According to creative director Jake Solomon, Marvel approached Firaxis with a request to force XCOM to make a game using IP. It was around 2017 when Firaxis released the War of the Chosen expansion for XCOM 2. “It’s natural to ask, where else can we go? And honestly, that’s a blessing. It’s a good problem,” admits DeAngelis.
While XCOM 3 would have been the logical next step, fate seems to have intervened, and Solomon’s legendary passion for all things Marvel, and the studio moved to Midnight Suns. “We get to explore new territory, and that’s exciting,” says DeAngelis, “these things that XCOM 3 isn’t necessarily tied to what we can do with this IP are incredibly exciting. We can open new horizons there.
But DeAngelis also wants to assure fans that XCOM is not forgotten. “We’re huge XCOM fans,” he says. “We love him. There is absolutely a future for him. But it was just an opportunity that could not be missed.”
