Stormgate is a new free-to-play real-time strategy game from Frost Giant Studios, a group of former Blizzard and StarCraft developers that offers “open three-player co-op” as well as 3v3 multiplayer matches. Engine 5 and very reminiscent of Blizzard’s favorite StarCraft strategy game series. Interested players can sign up to participate in the 2023 beta.
The trailer shows a human explorer talking to a small robotic drone that scans the environment to create holographic reconstructions of various statues and other structures. As the hologram forms, the metal shards fly together and form a large shield with a crystal in the center, but as the shield rises, a large winged demon flies in and attacks the scout. At the last moment, a mechanized suit with a jetpack arrives and rains bullets down on the demon before firing a final salvo of rockets, launching the seeker into the sky.
Production designer Tim Morten describes the titular Storm Gate as “portals that open during powerful solar storms that unleash a hellish host on the Earth of the future.” He and his team had previously worked on StarCraft II and decided to leave Blizzard when it seemed unlikely that StarCraft 3 would be coming any time soon.
Stormgate currently has two factions, humans and aliens, with a third planned for some time in the future, which meshes well with StarCraft’s trio of humanoid terrans, protoss cybernetic aliens, and beetle-like hiveminds. zerg.
Stormgate is free-to-play, though Morten was quick to say that the team strongly opposes the inclusion of NFTs and that players will never have to pay “to remove a handicap or gain an advantage.” Frost Giant also hopes to make real-time gaming more accessible to a wider audience with Stormgate by lowering the minimum skill level without lowering the potential high-level skill cap.
