Action Quake 2, the ancestor of CSGO, now has a separate Steam version

The AQtion Quake 2 Quake mod is available on Steam as a standalone version, making it the first time since the FPS game mod hit the scene in disc form back in 1998. The creators of AQtion consider it to be the game that inspired Counter Strike, originally a mod. derived from Half-Life. AQtion is free on Steam, as you’d expect from most mods, and it comes with a plethora of mods and features. While the mod is likely to be largely as you remember it from years ago, it will likely continue to change. AQtion Quake 2 is also on GitHub as an open source project that anyone can contribute to.

The development team originally created AQtion Quake 2 shortly after the release of Quake 2 in late 1997 because they wanted a more dynamic experience close to what is seen in action movies. Quake 2 can hardly be called tedious, but there’s no denying that AQtion achieves its goal of creating a more immersive experience.

The mod features six modes, including classic deathmatch, as well as team deathmatch, capture the flag, spy, and a strong teamplay mode. Despite AQtion’s focus on multiplayer, all of these modes can be played offline, as well as against a set of bots whose behavior you can customize to suit your needs.

AQtion Quake 2 gives you a deadly range of weapons to play in these modes, from grenades and shotguns to combat knives, sniper rifles and even a hand cannon.

While the self-release of a nearly 30-year-old Quake mod may seem like a coincidence, it’s just the latest development in the game’s dynamic fashion scene.

Fans are developing a Doom and Quake crossover mod that combines enemies and maps from both games, while Nightdive, the studio behind the Doom 64 PC port, is pushing for a proper Unreal Engine remaster of Quake.
