“Sonic the Hedgehog 2” became the highest-grossing film based on the video game shot in the United States.
Ben Schwartz, who plays Sonic in the film, took to Twitter earlier this week to point out that the sequel broke his previous record.

“#SonicMovie2 has officially topped the box office of the first #Sonic movie, becoming the official sequel to the highest-grossing video game of all time,” Schwartz wrote. “And that little blue boy is still going!!! Ahhh!!!!”
The film has grossed over $147 million to date, surpassing the $146 million domestic box office for the first film. Nearly half of that amount came during its opening weekend, where the film made $71 million and hit the box office. While Sonic 2 also made quite a bit of money overseas, it’s unlikely to break any global box office records — it grossed $287.8 million internationally, according to Deadline, which is well below the 2016 world’s $439 million. Paramount has announced that the third Sonic movie will be filming in February, but has yet to reveal the cast for more action. The arch nemesis is Dr. Jim Carrey, who plays Robotnik, said he may never appear in another movie again and that Paramount won’t do the character again if he decides not to return. Other key players in Sonic 2 include Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sampter, Natasha Rotwell, Colin O’Shea, and Idris Elba.
