Scavengers Studio sold, console version canceled

Development studio Dead by Daylight Behavior Interactive has acquired Midwinter Entertainment, the studio behind Co-op Shooter Scavengers, from former owner Improbable. The sale resulted in the cancellation of the planned console version for Scavengers.

The sale of Improbable is a step back from projects to create video games based on the SpatialOS cloud platform. For Midwinter, that means closed alpha testing for Scavengers (which Eurogamer says has already begun) will end. A small team at Midwinter will continue to maintain the PC version of the game, while the rest of the staff will work on a new, unannounced project.

Midwinter was founded by a group of former Halo developers who left 343 Industries in December 2016. The Scavengers was its first release as a free-to-play shooter where players join small teams battling for control of a shared environment inhabited by enemies and non-player rivals. The game has nowhere to find its target audience, and Steam reviews consistently point to a low player count as one of the game’s biggest problems.

Behavior CEO Remy Racine said of the acquisition, “Behavior was looking for the right studio, not just one studio. Chemistry was very important, and our similar values, cultures, and commitment to making games that cross boundaries and exceed expectations is a perfect match for Midwinter. “This is a significant step forward for Behavior, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in September, further proof of the impressive growth that has doubled our revenue since 2019, and our team has grown to nearly 1,000 full-time employees. .”
