Blizzard hires a vice president of culture

Blizzard announced the hiring of its senior vice president and chief culture officer, Jessica Martinez, on Thursday as the controversy surrounding her and her owner, Activision Blizzard, continues.

The hiring is part of Blizzard’s effort to recycle culture that has caught the attention of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. Both organizations sued Activision Blizzard over allegations of sexual harassment and gender discrimination in their offices, and Blizzard itself was voted the worst activity hotspot.

Blizzard says Martinez will be responsible for developing and implementing our culture strategy, ensuring alignment across all teams and functions, and updating learning and talent development programs.

“When you create first people in an environment where teams feel safe, valued and work together towards a common goal, everyone thrives – employees, players and businesses,” Martinez said in a statement.

Martinez joined Disney after 14 years as chief of staff and chief security officer, as well as chief technology officer and chief digital officer at Disney Parks & Resorts.

Earlier in April, Activision Blizzard also hired Kristen Hines as its new Chief Diversity, Capital & Inclusion Officer. She started working on this role on April 25 last year.

While Activision Blizzard has settled its case with the EEOC, it remains the target of lawsuits from the DFEH, a family of a current and former employee with ties to the game developer’s toxic work culture.

Recently, New York sued Activision Blizzard over what it described as CEO Bobby Kotik’s hasty attempt to sell the company to Microsoft to avoid consequences for its information and corporate culture mismanagement.
