According to the report, Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode will not be a standalone F2P title.

Previous reports had Modern Warfare 2’s upcoming “DMZ” mode listed as a free-to-play title, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

According to a new report, those working on the development of Activision’s next entry in Call of Duty have been frustrated by rumors about the game that false expectations are largely built around the long-running “DMZ” regime. The report comes from famed whistleblower and insider Tom Henderson of Try Hard Guides.

According to Henderson’s sources, the DMZ will launch alongside Modern Warfare 2 later this year, with one source simply calling it “another mod”. DMZ has been rumored to have its own free game and has been compared to Escape to Tarkov.

Henderson’s report says the DMZ mod will have some similarities to Escape to Tarkov, which are both extraction-based titles, but the mod will evolve over time. It seems to use the same map as Warzone 2 to some extent.

The report also references an earlier Bloomberg report from Activision that the next three Call of Duty games will be available on PlayStation as part of existing deals. This means that all other projects released by Treyarch’s Call of Duty 2024 game must be related to Modern Warfare 2 or Warzone 2.

Activision is apparently still working on an additional project called “Project Nexus,” but Henderson’s sources say it’s a separate DMZ project.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is currently scheduled for release on October 28, 2022.
