ECC Ediciones is taking back the jewelery created by Darwyn Cooke on the occasion of the premiere of The Batman.
When making a Batman reference reading list, you always tend to name essential authors. Yes, these are the basics… But that leaves little room for works that the layman knows less well, but that have had much or more of an influence on the very famous. And they are exactly the ones who deserve more visibility.

Interestingly, a character hailed as one of the most complex characters in the superhero scene has been tackled from multiple perspectives, but the “cave” of his mind has not been explored. And although that is the theme, the way it is presented as done here is typical genius.
He comes home psychologically completely exhausted after a disastrous night, as the Dark Knight had at times. And when he witnesses a serious tragedy, he is left alone in the bowels of the Batcave. Him and his demons. And just then, when the antihero is at his most vulnerable, his worst nightmare comes true: himself.
As a postmodern Jesus who comes face-to-face with the devil in the desert, Cooke conducts a character study and confronts him with what would happen if he accepted temptation as an easy way out. Batman is in constant conflict with his primal instincts.
In fact, the plot of this short story could be summed up in half a page. But that’s not the point. Rather, it is an approach to a figure who must decide who he really is.
As such, it is a very introspective work, and as such it is difficult not to separate it from the possible creative doubts that the artist has in approaching this project. It’s impressive how he managed to translate such abstract thoughts into words and images. The risk is undeniable, and so a work done so convincingly is commendable. It somehow approaches poetry, but with a rhythm that does not tire the reader.
If you want to know how hard it is to be Batman, and what Wayne has to deal with every time he puts on the hood, this is the perfect comic book. Because it demands to find a more meaningful example that synthesizes the bat’s identity. Cooke understands and describes the character in a way that is hard to get out of that vision.

As this project demonstrates, there seems to be no small business. Batman: Ego was the first comic to be published on DC, and it was an effort to do something really polished.
It is a work that constantly plays with compositions. Because of the premise of the plot, the author is forced to find new ways of telling the story. This comic is difficult to classify and describe because it manages to squeeze everything out of a classicism and considering its ease of reading. The pattern is to make variations on the classic 3×3 (largely justified), but if it stands out anywhere, it’s for when the picture takes up the whole page. It is then that the true symbolic meaning of creation takes place where the heart is.
Despite the fact that the author himself considers this comic a failure, one can simply disagree from here. It is a visually very creative work that constantly surprises with its simplicity and new ways of expression, typical of those who know all the possibilities of this medium.
While the work is currently out of stock, ECC Ediciones will release a careful new edition of it in March to coincide with the film.

While it’s still early to see how far the Lord of the Night has penetrated the director’s understanding, it’s gratifying to see this story take its place among the greats. If all this is for the people to get to their roots, welcome.
