Those of us devoted to comics, we used April 23 Book Day to celebrate what’s ours. But in this country’s literary industry, we are a rare bird, a strange thing. We have special outlets, special events, special distributors. An ecosystem of its own, sometimes running in parallel and sometimes intersecting with the rest of the editorial production. With different times, shapes and prices. We are strangers. We are unique. We deserve this date.
Today we claim our love of cartoons. Respect heritage and promote the future. This country illustrations are registered with sandwich censorship and usurpation. Today we are having discussions about networking for ideas, repositioning of production and uncertainty in accounts. But there is also an illusion. And more variety than ever before. Representation, feminism, courage. Comics for everyone. It is one of the values that represent the 21st century. With more opportunities than ever before. The readership crowd, avid story readers. Laugh, suffer, learn, explore, enjoy, hate, read, in short, get immersed in so many worlds that one life is not enough. Hand in hand with new audiovisual formats, without neglecting anything, with a bold look at what’s to come and an incredibly capable mountain to climb. Endless canvases in binary code or cardboard volumes occupying half a shelf. The possibilities are huge. And we keep scratching, because the biggest is always on the horizon.
Comics are very cheap movies to make. Sequential art that only requires a pen and a piece of paper. You don’t even need paper, any surface will do. A wall, a papyrus, a cave at Atapuerca. You can do this. It takes years of practice and reading to master this and get a National Award, it’s true, but you just need willpower. The same people who gutted us to continue publishing, drawing, translating, tagging, writing, designing, porting comics, what is the crisis this year? Real estate, epidemic, earthquake? We eat from them. We have so many examples to look at to gain strength from weakness! Matt Murdock after Elektra’s death. The Resistance defends the walls of Montjuïch. There is nothing more inspiring than a well-told story. What a well done comic. This is how we all move through vignettes, always wanting to give back to the medium all the good things it has given us. They helped us become the best version of ourselves.
