Although the Japanese company Square Enix has not been very successful lately, there is one brand that you can always rely on. Of course, this is the role-playing series Final Fantasy, whose history dates back to 1987 and this year celebrates its 35th anniversary. It already has 15 major episodes, and Final Fantasy XVI was announced in September 2020. The action of the novelty should take place in the fictional country of Valiste, where there is a threat of a large-scale conflict between 6 local factions.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get a lot of new information from the first trailer, and it wasn’t until last December that producer Naoki Yoshida said we’d find out more this spring. We are still waiting for news, but we can read some of Yoshida’s interview for a Japanese magazine, part of which was translated by VGC magazine. The most important message is that Final Fantasy XVI development is in its final stages. Of course, the manufacturer does not provide details, but there is definitely hope that the game will be released this year.
“Final Fantasy XVI focuses on integrating story and gameplay into a single-player game.” continues Yoshida, who previously led the development of the multiplayer Final Fantasy XIV. “Unlike online, which involves multiple players at the same time, Final Fantasy XVI focuses on individual personalities. It makes the story more exciting. It’s a very dense story.”
Yoshida also says that he hopes for the return of previous Final Fantasy fans who left the series for various reasons.
Final Fantasy XVI will be released on PlayStation 5 and PC, but the latter may come later.
