Red Dead Redemption 2 is the fourth best-selling game in the world. The 2018 Western epic has sold more than 79 million copies, according to a recent announcement from Take-Two Interactive. So they would have been against each other in Rockstar if the third part had not happened one day. The latter is almost certain, even according to Dan Houserbut personally he would like to see the story of the Dutch van der Linde gang continue where it left off.

Rockstar Games co-founder and writer Dan Houser, who played a major role in both previous installments, left the company in 2020. On Lex Friedman’s podcast, he explained that it would be difficult for him to watch someone else develop the world he helped create.

“Each of these games was a story in itself,” says Hauser. “For me, Red Dead Redemption is a separate saga, consisting of two parts. It would actually be sad if anyone continued it. But it will probably happen – I don’t own the brand. It was part of the deal.”

At the same time, the creator admitted that he worked on Red Dead Redemption 2 with the greatest impact of all the projects in his career. Although development was plagued by delays and stress, he described it as an extremely personal and creative experience. “There were moments when even strangers began to doubt us,” he remembers. “And it was very difficult.”

In the same interview Houser called Red Dead Redemption 2 the best game he’s ever worked on. According to him, the second part of the Western saga is a perfect example of how to tell a complex story in an open world and how to create a thematically cohesive experience that draws the player into a powerful emotional ride.

Red Dead Redemption 2 received a lot of praise – the game maintains its rating to this day. 97 points on Metacritic.like the legendary GTA V. Critics and players especially appreciate the depth of the characters, the detailed world and the strong narrative that is not easy to see.

While Houser is currently working on his new studio. Absurd enterpriseswhere he has two projects planned, Rockstar is mainly focusing on GTA 6, which after a delay will not be released until November 2026 on current generation consoles. Given the pace of the studio’s work, it’s unlikely that Red Dead Redemption 3 will ever happen.
