Square Enix fires Western teams

The goal is to simplify the organization and save $20 million.

Enix Square decided on mass layoffs in its European and American teams. On the one hand, they promise to strengthen the organizational structure, centralize marketing, and also, according to VGC magazine, save $19.6 million.

“This was a very difficult decision that was made after careful consideration and analysis by management to ensure the best possible environment for the company’s long-term growth,” Square Enix further commented.

The company did not specify the number of layoffs, but in the London branch alone almost 140 employees had to be notified of possible dismissal. Cuts will be made in the IT, marketing, publishing, sales, business planning and quality control departments. In the coming years, Square Enix plans to replace much of the latter section with artificial intelligence.

Square Enix already underwent a complete restructuring and change of strategy last year. First of all, it was about the transition to multi-platform publishing and focusing on a smaller number of publications, which ideally should be large and high-quality. Part of the changes included layoffs and reorganization of overseas subsidiaries, but according to company president Takashi Kiryu, this did not work, a source tells VGC.
