An 8% tax on video games rated as “violent” has been proposed, sparking heated debate.
News for Mexico players – the government approved the proposal through the lower house of parliament introduce an excise tax of 8% to video games marked as furiously (i.e. ratings C and D according to the Mexican SMECCV system). The tax will apply to both physical and digital copies, including DLC or subscriptions.
The authorities justify their move by saying that “recent studies” show a link between violent games and increased aggression in adolescents, but the scientific community reminds us that cause-and-effect relationship not proven. Critics say the tax may not reduce violence but could increase the price of games and encourage piracy or the black market.
More it’s just a suggestion — it still must be approved by the Senate and signed by the President. So if the law, which goes into effect in 2026, is confirmed, players in Mexico will face higher prices for some games.
We don’t want to paint the devil on the wall completely, but the question is whether other countries around the world might be inspired by this proposal.
