Sony has another reason to celebrate. PlayStation 5 officially surpassed legendary in US sales PlayStation 3. The information was confirmed by analyst Mat Piscatella from the Circana agency, which monitors the development of the gaming market.
The PlayStation 3, introduced in 2006, attracted the attention of its time mainly due to its unusual design. Nicknamed the “grill” or “spaceship” by fans, it initially had problems with its high cost and complex architecture, but eventually became an important milestone in gaming history. It was there that Sony first fully launched online games, multimedia functions and introduced the Blu-ray format, which at that time competed with DVD.
The current generation of PlayStation 5, released in 2020, is still doing great after five years on the market. it remains one of the best-selling devices in the US.. According to September data, it took second place in sales after the Nintendo Switch 2, while the entire US game console market showed year-on-year growth of 10%.
PS3 was surpassed less than five years after the launch of PS5. This probably would have happened sooner, but the launch of the current generation of PlayStation was quite difficult due to coronavirus, and Sony was struggling with a lack of units to sell.
According to official figures, the PS3 has sold over 87.4 million units worldwide since its inception (last updated as of March 2017), and PS5 has over 113.5 million units. Sony’s most successful console is the PlayStation 2, with more than 160 million units sold.
Beating the PS3 confirms that, despite growing competition, Sony has managed to maintain the momentum and player trust it has built for over a quarter of a century – from the era of the first PlayStation to today’s generation with games such as God of War Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 or Horizon Forbidden West.
