Tero Virtala led the Finnish studio for 9 years.
Finnish studio Remedy announced some unexpected news today. Its CEO, Tero Virtala, resigned with immediate effect, which should have been by mutual consent. At the same time, he does not yet have a full-fledged replacement and the search is just beginning, so Virtala remains in the company for now to help hand over the reins.
Virtala has been heading the Finnish studio since August 2016 and has managed to change the way the company works so that it can develop multiple games at the same time. During his tenure, the studio gave players the third-person action game Control, the survival horror Alan Wake 2 and the cooperative action game FBC: Firebreak. While the first two games were well received by critics and gamers alike, Firebreak was a failure, primarily financially. So this may be one of the main reasons for Virtul’s departure, which does not seem to be completely voluntary due to the suddenness and lack of preparation.
So, while Remedy looks for a replacement, the post of CEO will be temporarily filled by Markus Mäki, the studio’s co-founder and current chairman of the board. He is now stepping down from this position and Henri Österlund, who has been a member of the board since 2017, has been elected as the new chairman.
“I want to thank Tera Virtala for his significant contributions to the management of Remedy since 2016,” says interim CEO Markus Mäki. “I personally thank Tera for his good cooperation and wish him all the best for the future.”
We don’t yet know exactly what this exchange will mean for the future of the studio, but we can learn more from the regular financial report and subsequent investor conference scheduled for next Wednesday, October 29th. End of support for FBC: Firebreak is definitely in play. In addition, the studio is currently developing remakes of Max Payne 1 and 2, as well as a full-fledged sequel to Control. Work is also underway on another, as yet unspecified project.
