It’s not often that a big game gets an additional Czech localization. All the more surprising was the announcement of the French studio Sandfall Interactive, which will add Czech texts to its successful title. Claire Obscurus: Expedition 33 in the biggest update to date for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
This update serves as a gift to fans in honor of 5 million copies sold (and this is the game from the very beginning on Game Pass). “We want to thank you for your tremendous support. There’s a lot of new content and some features that the community has been asking for for a long time.” explained creative director Guillaume Broche in an interview with Eurogamer.
Along with the expansion of localizations, the game will be expanded a completely new gaming environment with enemiesthat you haven’t seen in the game yet, as well as new bosses designed for more experienced players, various cosmetic items, etc.
Claire Obscur: The 33rd expedition was transferred to the experimental summer Filip Jenishekknown for his work on games such as Assassin’s Creed, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Cyberpunk 2077. And we interviewed him about his work and the game itself. Enjoy the interview.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was released at the end of April this year. The Czech Republic was announced to celebrate 5 million units sold. When did you start working on the translation and how long did the whole process take?
The client approached me with a proposal for this project in June of this year. Shortly thereafter, I was given access to the game to review it, as well as a wealth of reference material to make the translation easier for me. Since the game is just over 100,000 words (approximately 350 standard pages), the translation itself, including proofreading, took less than three weeks.
You probably know that there was also a fan-made Czech language from Farflame. Have you considered the possibility of inviting him to collaborate?
I admit that I don’t really follow the translation activities of the community, but even if I did, it wouldn’t change anything. I have strict non-disclosure agreements with all clients, so I couldn’t talk about this project at all. I was able to announce this only after the developers officially announced the Czech localization.
Do you view this project as a regular job or did it have personal significance for you?
It is now rare for an already released game to retroactively receive an official Czech localization, as there is a lot of pressure to have all language versions available on launch day. Meanwhile, many of my friends and acquaintances had already played this game and were simply delighted with it, so I looked forward to work with even greater impatience. Many of them write to me that they would like to play the game again in Czech to enjoy it even more.
Clair Obscur has a strong poetic and melancholic atmosphere – how difficult was it to maintain its tone in Czech?
This game is truly unique in its concept and tone. Breathtaking visuals and an absolutely phenomenal soundtrack are complemented by heartfelt dialogue and superb dubbing. Well-written texts are easier to work with when translating, and with enough context, I knew what was happening in each scene so I could try to accurately capture each character’s speaking style and maintain the tone of emotional scenes.
