Nintendo Switch 2 offers two very different versions of DLSS

One of them creates the best picture, the other is less demanding.

Considering that the hardware of Switch 2 was known long before the release of this console, which ultimately occurred only in June of this year, assumptions were shown about the possible use of NVIDIA DLS scale. The editor -chief of the Richard Lidbetter digital foundry has already released a detailed video in the 2023 list, where he tested the RTX 2050 graphic card (the closest T239 chip model in SWITCH 2) and tried to find out if DLS is possible on SWITCH 2.

Despite the fact that it has come to an end, self -stinging scaling is so required of weak graphics that it is mainly impossible to use it for the output resolution than 1080p. While Full HD Leadbetter measured that DLSS took about 3 milliseconds from the total time to calculate the current image, at 1440p it was 7 ms and at 4K even 18 milliseconds. This means that 4K and 60 FPS is strictly impossible using DLSS, because only self -stinging scaling takes more time than the distance between two images (16.7 ms), and it does not yet include all other calculations that need the game.

Despite all this, Switch 2 had several games that worked in 4K in 60 frames per second and used DLSS. So how is it possible? Was the Leadbetter analysis inaccurate, or is the equipment of the new Nintendo console stronger than we expected? The answer lies a little more and applies to the most scaling. As it turned out, DLSS does not look like DLSS.

The whole question was studied by the editor of Digital Foundry Alex Battalia, who compared several Switch 2 games with the PC version to see whether DLSS is the same or not. On the one hand, we have a Cyberpunk 2077 or Street Fighter 6, both games that have a 1080p resolution on Switchi, and the image quality that greatly resemble the older DLSS CNN, which we know from computers. On the other hand, names such as Hogwarts Legacy, Star Wars Outlaws, Touryst and Fast Fusion offer a higher output resolution, and their image is not very similar.

Thus, the Battalia came to the conclusion that was subsequently confirmed by one developer who is familiar with the DLSS on Switch 2. On the one hand, we have a version that greatly resembles the CNN model with a PC that correctly smoothes the edges, even when moving or switching the camera, the image can be slightly tangible, and the output resolution does not exceed 1080p.

DLSS “Lite” against CNN Model and Transformer Model

The second version is completely new, probably exclusive only for Switch 2, and, according to the developer, its difficulties are about half the classic model. As a result, the game can reach a higher output permission, even 4K, but it is worth it. The image can be sharper than the CNN model, but the anti-aliats are already much worse, sometimes zero. While everything is good in a static scene, when moving objects or when switching cameras, pixels of completely “unprocessed”, almost without burning.

Battaglia closes the video, understanding the importance of the second version of DLSS, but, despite its less demanding and higher exit permission, he does not really like it. Thus, he recommends that the developers use the classic DLSS, where it does not reach higher resolution than 1080p, but the image is still much cleaner and better.
