Path of Progress is a strategy game about building a civilization.

Civilization games always find their audience. They offer a unique combination of strategy, planning and construction that allows players to become the architects of their own empire. If you’ve ever wanted to lead your nation to glory, The Path of Progress will allow you to do so. In it, players compete to build the most successful civilization, relying on their skills in discovering technology, settling new territories, and strategic planning. Unlike classic games with fixed rounds, Path of Progress has a dynamic ending. The game continues until certain conditions are met, meaning that each game can have a different length. This unpredictability increases tension, forcing players to be flexible in their plans.

The game is divided into separate rounds, each of which includes several stages. The first phase is the action phase, which is critical to the development of your civilization. Here players place their population numbers on the action boards, of which there are eight in total. Each of them offers a different type of activity – from technological research to preparing resources for future moves. Action fields are designed to keep you moving. You can’t stay in one place for more than one turn, forcing players to think ahead and plan their moves carefully. Do you want to focus on research or rather strengthen your economy? The options are varied, and each decision has long-term consequences.

Technological research is one of the main pillars of the game. You start with simple first level technologies that you can easily master. However, over time, you will be able to unlock more complex technologies that require more resources – money, figurines, or both. Each technology brings new abilities, such as the ability to strengthen units, build stronger fortifications, or gain one-time benefits. Besides exploration, expanding the map is also an important part of the game. You can send your figures as settlers or soldiers that move around the game map. This movement allows players to establish settlements, build fortifications, or complete tasks related to the control of certain territories. For example, creating a settlement costs four coins, but provides valuable benefits later in the game.

If you already have a built village on the map, you can develop it further. Fortification is a key step that increases your defense and opens the way to researching advanced technologies. Players who can effectively combine expansion and technological development usually have a better chance of winning. The action phase is followed by a boom phase, which is optional but very useful. Here players can build a new building, contribute to the construction of the overall structure, or strengthen their settlement. These moves are not only strategic, but also provide immediate benefits, such as gaining resources or points.

Next comes the production stage, during which players receive new resources. They can choose, for example, coins, new figurines, or the ability to return figurines from the card back to their inventory. This stage is crucial for preparing for future moves and allows players to acquire the necessary resources for further development. A special part of the game is the task phase, which rewards the player for completing certain tasks. Each completed task allows the player to place a die on the corresponding card. The first player to complete the task receives five points at the end of the game, while the others receive only three. Once four tasks are completed, the game ends. The endgame rating includes points earned for technologies, settlements, completed tasks and other factors. The player with the most points is declared the winner.

After playing a few times, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by Path of Progress. That’s because it’s a surprisingly accessible civilizational challenge where you work with good components, striving to achieve the best outcome through exploration and expansion. In short, it’s a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.
