AMD continues to keep the details secret, it still has nothing to do with PSSR.
Yesterday we wrote about Digital Foundry’s first impressions of the upcoming new version of DLSS, which includes not only the Multi Frame Gen feature, but also an improved scaling model and much more. However, AMD also introduced new technology: version FSR 4 should provide scaling based on machine learning. Although AMD is still unclear about the FSR 4 and RDNA 4 graphics cards, some journalists were already able to try out the FSR 4 at CES.
Among them were Alex Battaglia and Oliver McKenzie from Digital Foundry, who accidentally stumbled upon the new technology at the AMD booth. It was only presented to them as a “research project”, but given that the scaling was compared to FSR 3.1, it is almost certainly FSR 4.
The implementation was shown in the game Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, both upscaling was set to Performance mode, so the image was reconstructed from 1080p to 4K. Unfortunately, we don’t have any direct gameplay footage, AMD didn’t want to publish them, so we can only refer to the verbal impressions of both the editors and camera shots.
Either way, Battaglia and McKenzie note the elimination of the unpleasant moire effect on carpet or flicker caused by SSAO technology. The noise of moving spectators in the stands has also been removed, and flying confetti is now clearer and leaves no trace behind. Hardware Unboxed’s Tim Schiesser had similarly positive impressions of the demo.
Interestingly, although Sony works quite closely with AMD (and even more so after the recent announcement of Project Amethyst), FSR 4 is said to share virtually no features with PSSR, which is still dealing with grain issues.
Unfortunately, we still don’t know the release date for FSR 4. We also don’t know if this technology will be exclusive to the new Radeon RX 9000 graphics cards.
