Markus “Notch” Perssoncreator of the legendary Mining craftis openly considering the possibility of creating a game that could be a spiritual successor to his famous dice game. The social network X conducted a survey of fans interested in a Minecraft sequel or a traditional roguelike. Result? Almost 80% of voters want to see Minecraft 2.
In response to the survey, Notch stated that open to the idea of creating a new game that would deliver an experience similar to the original Minecraft.but without any connection to the current direction of the game under Microsoft. As he himself stated:
“Maybe people really want me to make something like the original Minecraft” wrote Notch, stating that he had rediscovered his passion for creating games. It will be a spiritual successor and not an attempt to compete with the current Mojang.
Notch also expressed concern that spiritual successors often disappointand therefore wants the new game to be created in collaboration with the community, for example through early access.
While he admitted that he wasn’t sure if the project would ever see a finished version, his interest in returning to game development has fans excited. Minecraft which in 2014 sold to Microsoft for $2.5 billion.has since become the best-selling game in history. However, Notch noted that he does not always agree with the current direction of the brand: “I don’t mean to disrespect Mojang, but sometimes I feel like Microsoft made some parts of the game worse.”
Only time will tell if Minecraft 2 will become a reality. But now Notch and his fans may be considering a return to the world of construction and exploration that changed the world of video games 14 years ago.
