Centurion Developments tries to capitalize on this potential and adds its own twist – turn-based tactical combat inspired by the XCOM series, combined with base management and gritty survival elements. This combination sounds like the perfect combination for fans of tactical games looking for something that pushes the genre forward.
To all this, the game tries to add the emotionally charged story of Martin Hupka, whose personal tragedy fuels his desire for revenge. But can the game truly live up to its potential and become an unforgettable experience, or is it just another of the many games trying to emulate more successful models?
The game’s story has a dramatic and promising beginning. Martin Hupka, an ordinary man, is forcibly separated from his wife at the beginning of the war when their home is raided by the German army. His wife is likely to be executed, and Martin, driven by a desire for revenge, joins the partisan resistance. Under the leadership of American officers, Martin becomes part of an international group specializing in sabotage operations and the fight against German occupation.
At first, the game gives the impression that the story of Martin and his revenge will be a powerful driver of everything that happens. However, after the opening events, the story begins to lose momentum and becomes little more than filler between missions. The main storyline doesn’t fully emerge until the end of the game, which is disappointing. This puts you in a situation where your actions have no clear purpose or meaning other than simply surviving until the end of the war.
One of the biggest problems with this story is its inability to create deeper relationships between you and the characters. They are portrayed superficially and their personalities are limited by clichés. Although the game tries to use different nationalities to add variety, the lack of development of these characters makes them mere tools to complete missions. Cut scenes that could have added emotional punch often feel clunky, with dramatic moments that devolve into unwanted humor.
