Ubisoft is turning heads again – this time not because of any high-profile games or other problems, but because of a low-key release new games using blockchain and NFT technology. Game Captain Laserhawk: THE GAMEinspired by the Netflix animated series Captain Laserhawk: Blood Dragon Remix is now available in Early Access on PC.
It’s a top-down multiplayer shooter where players need to purchase so-called Citizen ID NFTs. This card, known as the “Nija Warrior ID”, costs approx. 26 dollars (about 630 CZK), and a crypto wallet is required to purchase it. Players with this card can not only play, but also watch it “evolve” as the card dynamically changes based on progress in the game, which is said to increase its value and uniqueness.

Ubisoft says “Captain Laserhawk: THE GAME” is “transmedia gaming experience“, where the community of players influences the development of the game. This includes, for example, making decisions about updates or seasonal changes through the Eden Online platform, which is designed for 10,000 players with an active Citizen ID.
However, according to journalist Steven Totila of Game File, the process of acquiring an ID is complicated and cumbersome. Additionally, it remains unclear why anyone would want to sell their NFTs, given the limited interest in such technology in the gaming community.
Let us remind you that this is not Ubisoft’s first experiment with blockchain and NFTs. Already in 2021, the French company launched the platform Quartzwhich was supposed to bring “energy efficient” NFTs to AAA games. However, this initiative was not successful and was met with a wave of criticism. However, Ubisoft continues to work in this area – it was only released in October of this year.
