Project 8 had too many problems.
Polish studio 11 bit, which has games like This War of Mine and both parts of the frosty strategy game Frostpunk, has been working since 2018 on a third-person action game with a strong story, which was intended to be aimed mainly at console players. The project, codenamed 8, was very ambitious; at one of the investor conferences, the developers compared it in scale to the game Remedy’s Control, but during development it constantly encountered problems.
With each subsequent internal delay, of which there were many, the budget gradually increased until it became unbearable and a few days ago the studio management canceled the project completely. In total, the studio invested more than 48.4 million zlotys in it, which is approximately 286 million crowns. As of September this year, there were 37 developers working on the project, and it appears that the layoffs will affect everyone, although 11bit adds that it will help them find new jobs if they are interested.
According to board chairman Przemyslaw Marshall, Project 8 was developed in a different time and under conditions that no longer apply, in particular hinting at the appeal of heavily story-driven games. After analyzing the final stages, it became clear that the project needed additional time, and combined with declining sales estimates, the studio decided to end the project.
We only saw one short teaser of Project 8 in December 2021; a full presentation of the game never happened. In addition to the Frostpunk 2 expansion, 11 bit is also currently finishing work on the survival game The Alters, which should be released sometime in the first quarter of next year.
