2024 Game of the Year Award Astro Bot surprised not only some players, but also the producer Black Myth: Wukong. Chinese studio Game Science won the most prestigious award, The Game Awards. But only two received the award – for the best action and player choice. Producer and studio CEO Feng Ji was not satisfied with this at all.
“All of the games nominated this year were exceptional, but I honestly still don’t understand the criteria used to select game of the year. I feel like I came here in vain!” Feng Ji wrote on the Weibo platform.
Although the studio received two awards, the producer admitted that fans were disappointed: “I saw a lot of anger and frustration in the players’ comments, often expressed with humor or irony, which made me laugh.” Feng Ji stated and added: “I understand these emotions and share them, because behind these feelings there is not pain and anger, but dignity and self-confidence.
Feng Ji also admitted that two years ago, he prepared an acceptance speech in honor of possibly winning Game of the Year (GOTY), but unfortunately, he did not have the opportunity to deliver it. Despite his disappointment, Feng Ji expressed his pride in the success of “Black Myth: Wukong” and his belief that the game marks the beginning of a new era of high-quality games from Chinese developers.
Alana Pierce, a former writer for Sony Santa Monica (God of War), mentioned in her broadcast that she saw a member of the Game Science team in the audience. posterwhen Black Myth: Wukong didn’t receive a major award. “You could see it meant a lot to them. They did an amazing job.” Pierce said, noting that the studio member’s reaction surprised her.
GOTY winner Astro Bot also took home awards for Best Director, Best Action/Adventure and Best Family Game. Other award-winning works included e.g. Balatro And Metaphor: ReFantasio. Here are the results.
Black Myth: Wukong is among the best-selling games in the world. In the first month, the number reached 20 million on the PC and PlayStation 5 versions. The Xbox Series X/S version still does not have a set release date.
