Only the most skilled will survive in Far Cry: Escape from Rook Islands

If you’re a fan of board games inspired by famous video games, then Far Cry: Escape from Rook Islands should definitely not escape your attention. The game takes you back to a legendary island full of danger, where you start out with a group of survivors who work together to escape the mad Vaas and his gang. Instead of the frantic action you’re used to from the video game series, you’ll find thoughtful turn-based strategy that emphasizes cooperation and good tactics.

The game is built on a strong connection to the original story. Players can choose between characters such as Jason, Lisa, Kit or Daisy, each of whom have unique abilities that can decisively affect the outcome of the game. For example, Jason can take two extra steps once per mission, and Keith can reflect enemy attacks on himself to protect his allies. These abilities allow you to customize your playstyle and decide how your team will progress.

Compared to the video game original, which was full of adrenaline and frantic action, Escape from Rook Islands focuses on slower and more deliberate game mechanics. The game consists of seven main missions that you need to complete in order to reach a successful ending. In addition to these key missions, you will also have exploration expeditions, during which you will receive various benefits for the following missions. Exploring the area, collecting resources and planning force you to think about every step.

The game system is based on three main types of actions. Logistics solutions use repetitive activities, from moving, collecting items and raw materials, to quiet procedures that minimize the risk of detection. Limited Action, on the other hand, focuses on combat and the use of weapons, be it pistols, shotguns, or even machetes. Finally, there are special actions that players can use to gain a tactical advantage. This combination gives the game dynamism and a balance between action and planning.

Far Cry: Escape from Rook Islands is a game based on cooperation and communication between players. Each move must be carefully planned to ensure that the characters’ individual abilities are used as effectively as possible. For example, during combat you can combine offensive skills with defense, or focus on taking out enemies silently, which requires strategic character placement and good dice rolls. Failures are common, but every mistake is a valuable lesson for the next rounds.

The game perfectly conveys the atmosphere of a dangerous island. During each mission you are under time pressure and constant threats. Enemies behave according to clear rules, but their actions seem natural and varied. Sometimes they try to take a better firing position, sometimes they aggressively attack the weakest member of the team. This element adds realism to the game and forces the player to constantly adapt. One of the most interesting mechanics is stress, which affects your characters over time. Each elimination of an enemy leaves marks on your characters. These effects can be positive (such as improved ability to concentrate) or negative, such as decreased performance in subsequent rounds.

Far Cry: Escape from Rook Islands surprised

Converting FPS into a gaming table is a complex process that not everyone can do. But in this regard, Far Cry: Escape from Rook Islands pleasantly surprised me. This is one of the truly successful video game adaptations. The combination of tactical combat, exploration, and an emphasis on cooperation makes this game a great choice for those who seek a challenge and appreciate thoughtful design. Although it may seem more complex, it will provide determined players with an unforgettable gaming experience. If you want to experience tension and adventure on an island full of enemies, this game will not disappoint you.

However, you need to prepare a little for the fact that the creators will put in front of you a bunch of components, as well as playing surfaces, the processing of which will interest some, but may discourage others. But what are we talking about? Far Cry: Escape from Rook Islands is great overall, so if you don’t know what to do, this is the obvious choice.

We would like to thank Czech distributor Asmodee Czech Republic for providing us with a copy of Far Cry: Escape from Rook Islands.
