After bad images and game demo cards, Valve decided to set rules for developers and publishers regarding Season passes. On Steam, companies will have to make it clear exactly what players will get when purchasing the Season Pass before the product is even released.
Season Passes will now have a separate product page on Steam where you can find all the information you need. With this step Valve wants to guarantee greater transparency and to avoid disappointment for players who have often purchased season passes with unclear or insufficiently specified content.
Valve now requires developers and publishers to:
- They detailed the contents of the Season Pass, including a list of planned DLC and bonuses.
- They have set a time frame during which each additional content will be available to players.
- They didn’t promise anything that wouldn’t be delivered, like content.
Unless someone is willing to clearly state what the Season Pass will contain as DLC and when they will be ready to release, then that Season Pass should not be offered on Steam. It’s clear that Valve understands that things don’t always go according to plan. For this reason an approximate date is enoughfor example December/December 2025, or a time of year such as winter 2025. It is also possible to delay the release of DLC, but only once and for a maximum of three months.
Season Pass content belongs to Valve. check regularly. If additional content is cancelled, Season Pass purchasers must be refunded the equivalent value of that DLC. This can also happen if the DLC is released with a significant delay. If developers and publishers do not include this information on the label, they risk not allowing their product to be sold.
“This is exactly what the market needs. Season passes are often just a marketing ploy, and now hopefully we’ll be clearer about what we’re actually buying.” stands in one of the many positive reactions from players on social networks. Against some developers criticize the change. According to them, such a detailed plan for additional content cannot always be prepared in advance. They fear that the new approach could limit their creative freedom or make game development more difficult.
