Some kind of mysterious RPG Recognized from Obsidian Entertainment are finally starting to show us. We had the opportunity to play further sit for about two hours and find out if this game is worth waiting for early next year.
Avowed is an RPG in the style of, for example, the studio’s previous game The Outer Worlds, but focused on fantasy rather than science fiction. Specifically, right in the world of another series from Obsidian – Pillars of Eternity. This alone, at first glance, shows that the developers are trying to combine elements of their most successful games. The world and its building is based on their popular isometric CRPG, and the gameplay and accessibility are known from, for example, Fallout: New Vegas. The result is accepted. A colorful role-playing game based on vivid dialogue, environmental exploration and an exciting combat system. And these two hours with the game showed us that this is precisely the strongest side of the game.
In the role messengera kind of agent and ambassador of one of the rulers, we go to the so-called Living Lands to stop the local special plague, Dream Scourge. But we weren’t too interested in the room itself. The game isn’t afraid to throw a lot of terms and names at the player, and it’s actually easy to get lost in the game. Dialogy offers the ability to bring up a context menu and learn more about special terms, but this doesn’t help much with the initial confusion.
Luckily, you’ll soon begin to deal with more understandable questions. One of the quests we experienced involved a woman in trouble after her home was mysteriously ransacked by local lizard goblin-like creatures – Xaurips. It was a short quest that involved… let’s say depopulating the barracks. It was actually very simple, but even a simple quest offered multiple endings when it turned out that the Xaurips had rather unusually painted a mural in a woman’s house that looked like the owner of the orphanage. Such a simple quest suddenly seemed interesting because it offered a mystery that we could partially solve. And according to our decision, we won’t be surprised if the mission somehow continues at a later stage in the game. Either due to the death of the woman, or perhaps due to the beginning of an unprecedented alliance between humans and Xauripa.
The dialogues are made in the classic style familiar to us from role-playing games. NPC characters chat, and at certain stages you have the opportunity to choose several dialogue options yourself. They often range from the “good Samaritan” category to the “scumbag” category. You can’t be completely angry, but the conversations we experienced ended in either apathy or aggression. So conflicts were often resolved with both mouth and fists.
When it comes to this, it is advisable to very quickly switch to one of the many weapons offered in the game. You can play with swords, huge hammers, bows, muskets, grimoires to summon magic, and even a wand for real Harry Potter cosplay. The game doesn’t lock you into classes in any way, so you can fight anything you want.
