The Colosseum reopens its doors. Almost a quarter of a century after the legendary gladiator Maximus sprinkled him with his blood, another warrior will enter the arena and shake the foundations of Rome itself. Legendary director Ridley Scott will be here again.
Lucius (Paul Mescal), grandson of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of the “first” gladiator Maximus, lives secretly in one of the last free cities in North Africa. However, the expanding Roman Empire will not leave him alone. All it takes is one massive attack by a fleet led by General Acasio (Pedro Pascal), and a prosperous city will turn into ruins, and the free Lucius into a nameless slave. The slender captive is spotted by gladiatorial match organizer Macrinus (Denzel Washington), who wants to make him the star of the Roman Colosseum (before he is replaced by someone more capable). However, gladiatorial combat is not the main game Marcin plays. Realizing the weakness of an empire ruled by two mad emperors, Caracalla and Geta, the brilliant strategist begins a risky game in which gladiator and rightful heir to the Roman throne Lucius, his mother Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, reprising her role from the first part) fight on an imaginary chessboard and the general Akaki, her husband and the man her son hates to death for ruining his life. A clash is approaching in which blood will be spilled not only through the Colosseum, but also through the streets of Rome.
Legendary director Ridley Scott will present the second Gladiator hits theaters nearly 25 years after the landmark Russell Crowe film. Almost 450,000 spectators watched it in Czech cinemas. The director admits that the appearance of a sequel after such a long time may seem suspicious. “At the same time, it was so simple and logical. I knew who survived, who would take you through the story, and where they would go in it.” he says. Scott thinks Gladiator II for his best film. “I say this to scare the competition. But no, he’s really good“, he adds.
