The fantasy world of Thedas is a place of ancient magic, heroic deeds and many terrifying dragons. Where demons constantly try to control those who have magical talents. Where the elves lost their ancient glory and immortality. And where the Gray Guardians are constantly waiting for disaster in the form of the next Plague of monstrous creation. We’re talking about the series Age of the Dragonone of the most famous and largest franchises of the BioWare studio, which has won the hearts of millions of players around the world. Dragon Age is essentially a spiritual successor the first two parts of Baldur’s Gate and adopted from them many aspects that already belong to BioWare games. For example, a fascinating plot and its presentation, interesting interlocutors with whom you can make friends or start a romance, and, last but not least, of course, the role-playing game itself, which determines the character of the player and shapes his character.

All this against the backdrop of a fascinating and very interesting world, which was carefully created by game designer and screenwriter David Gaider together with other creators. And since after many years… what “years”, literally AGES of waiting, the fourth volume with the subtitle Dreadwolf will soon be released… ahem, excuse me: ,,Guardian of the Veil“, let’s take a closer look at the magic of this world. What makes the world of Dragon Age so exciting? Why do we like it so much? And how does this make us care about his future? We’ll look at all this now. Of course, be careful! There will be giant spoilers for all three games ahead.! You have been warned!

While games like Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic were based on long-standing universes including Dragon Age (as was Mass Effect), the smart minds at BioWare had to start from scratch. However, creating an interesting fantasy game world with elves, dwarves and dragons, which is not so expensive, and robbing Tolkien is not an entirely simple task. Not to mention, it must also have depth and credibility. And this is exactly what the creators managed to do with the best work of the entire franchise to date, which, of course, is the very first game, i.e. Dragon Age: Originswhere the player, as one of the Gray Wardens, sets out to stop the Infestation, a large invasion of evil monsters called spawners.

And one of the reasons why the world of Thedas is so fascinating lies in the subtitle itself. One of the best things about the first game is the ability to choose your character’s origin. Will you play as a city elf facing a failed wedding, or as a nobleman whose entire family is nearly wiped out? Will you play as a mage in the Circle Tower whose friend is about to seriously break the rules, or as a poor dwarf who is not respected by most of society? It’s completely up to you. What’s most surprising, however, is how much work BioWare put into each origin. The fact that players start in different locations depending on their character creation is nothing new in RPG games, but this type of intro usually sells out within minutes. However, in Dragon Age: Origins, this prologue can take over half an hour. There is a lot of talking, fighting, and exploring going on during this time.

This all then culminates in an event that will eventually force you to leave this place and travel to Ostagar with Gray Warden Duncan. The fact that you can choose your own origin, which is also carefully crafted and thanks to the individual dramatic events, is also fascinating and personal. this gives the player a great feeling that this is truly HIS own adventure. And he has an even greater desire to discover what the rest of this wonderful world has to offer.
