A generation of mostly useless remakes and remasters. This is the name of the current era of mainstream games. However, sometimes there are remakes that not only deserve their existence, but also defend against their opponents. And when the stars are especially aligned, sometimes the remake even surpasses the legendary original. For many, this happened with the remake of Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 4. And for others, although perhaps not all, this will happen with the fresh and just revised Silent Hill 2. The classic survival horror returns in its old formwhich should show everyone that Silent Hill is not hidden yet. And the Polish Bloober Team succeeded, at least in our opinion.

For many, Bloober Team’s games are of more average quality. Confidence in a perfect remake of something as iconic and revolutionary as Silent Hill 2 has been lopsided at best since its announcement. But the team took the criticism to heart; and it’s not just that this is the result of a survival horror that perfectly fills the current empty space before the next Resident Evil work. But at the same time, it is a horror film that, like the original, stands well on its own. That’s how good the remake is, after all. And above all, faithful.

Most of all, this is reflected in the story itself. As many years ago, we now find ourselves in the shoes of James Sunderland, who is looking for his wife, who died three years ago. And this is after we receive a mysterious letter from her, which lures us to the city of Silent Hill. Subsequent research into the human psyche and other more complex themes that once made this game so famous, that’s why they are waiting for us this time too. However, the method changes to some extent. Of course, audiovisual effects play a big role – I’ll get to that later – but so does the overall pacing of the game.

This is noticeably different from the original. Although you will recognize certain scenes, gameplay moments, locations, dialogues and even parts of the level design from the original version – often quite brilliantly translated into higher quality graphics, preserving the original vision as much as possible – the developers were not afraid to double down on almost every part of the game. Be it the streets of the city and its large number of accessible buildings and shops, apartments or other places.you’ll be everywhere wander significantly longer than before. And the word “wander” is partly correct here. While it’s almost always clear where you need to go or what you need to do, the game isn’t afraid to let you off the leash and open up an open space for you to simply explore and find your way on your own. Having to enter every room and search every corner will be important on more than one occasion, and while it may seem very frustrating, the opposite is true. This is mainly due to how masterfully the game handles atmosphere.

Whether it’s the wide streets of a city or the narrow corridors of a hospital, you’ll always be on edge and your ears will be alert to every step, creaking or radio noise that signals the presence of an enemy nearby. And of course, in some locations, especially in the second half of the game, it is raised even higher. Tbut it can also be a double-edged swordbecause if you manage to miss an important point to move forward, it can seriously detract from the overall pacing of the narrative and story. It’s usually difficult to do something like this, but I can think of one or two cases where it was easy for someone to miss an important part. However, some damage to tempo can occur even in moments when you are not particularly stuck. Due to the large locations, you can easily find yourself hours away from the next major plot development. And from time to time, you may forget that you are actually doing all this for your wife.whose death plays a central role in the story. I don’t think this is a particularly significant problem, but it is a somewhat negative aspect that naturally comes with larger locations without a significant increase in the number of cutscenes and pure plot points. However, when I return to those locations, you will recognize not only them, but also some puzzles, the ensemble of which will be replenished with completely new ones. Additionally, their difficulty can be adjusted at the start of the game, along with the ability to set the difficulty of fights. The developers have truly expanded every part of the game without changing what made the original so great.
