Only one pack can dominate a space.
Last week was a pretty good one thanks to Lego Monkey Palace: Monkey Palace. However, it’s time for the conflict board again – Wolves is here, and with it a detailed look at how this thing works and what it offers in terms of gameplay for strategy fans.

Wolves will put the whole pack at your disposal
The player faces an unbridled nature, you go to meet it at the head of a pack, consisting of two alpha wolves and two ordinary wolves with whom you have to work. The shape of the map may always be different, but in any case you will find an area whose visual design will captivate you. Your task is to score as many points as possible, which you achieve in three ways. The most basic of them is the struggle for territory. Every pack wants to have as much hunting space as possible under its claws. Hunting is the second alternative way to get points. The last option to increase your chances of winning is to develop a pack. It, of course, does not have to consist only of the basic composition.
You improve your flock by building nests. You only have the option of placing them where there are no non-native wolves or competing litters. In addition, the presence of alpha is necessary. If you meet all the conditions, you can discard one nest from your playing field and thereby open access to the bonus that is hidden under this box. This way you can increase your mobility, the number of wolves you can move, or the range of the alpha wolf. Thanks to his howl, he can receive a new wolf into the pack when activating a token with a wolf’s head. You can also tame other people’s wolves or lairs, but only in an environment that is friendly to you.
Each wolf pack here has its own natural biome from which it receives cards. Almost all actions involve cards, which you use to move around the game world. You even use them to create dens and hunt. The hunt itself takes place in such a way that you surround the prey with at least three wolves and catch it. You can only get one loot of a given type during the game. For the token you receive, you will subsequently receive a rage token, allowing you to take another action.
At the same time, it is important for you to control the regions. Whoever has the upper hand in a given space receives points when you reach a point with a certain moon phase on a lunar board already filled with tokens and removed pieces. There are three rating phases in the game, and they are strongly related to the shape of the moon in a given location. Therefore, not everyone receives points for verification. Strength is assessed by the placement of wolves, alphas, dens and lairs. The winner gets more points and the other player gets less. The rest receive nothing. So it’s useful to think tactically about what will and won’t pay off for you. The winner of the entire game is the one who manages to score the most points at the end of the game.
Wolves is a bestseller for good reasons
The last time the Wolves album appeared, it disappeared from stores very quickly. And, at least to myself, I must say that I am not at all surprised. This is a precious stone that amazes at first sight with its craftsmanship. The components are incredibly well designed, but when it comes to gameplay, the game doesn’t fall far short either, because while it’s inherently accessible, it offers enough features to make each game unique. Since I enjoy games that focus on territory control and conflict, I really enjoyed this game.
Who would I recommend Volkov to? Personally, I wouldn’t be afraid to target a wider group of players. Once you understand the individual game mechanics, this game will give you a very enjoyable experience. It has proven itself even among players who do not know the boards, which I consider a big plus. So if you’re looking for a conflict strategy, I think this is an obvious choice and you don’t have to hesitate too much.
We would like to thank Czech distributor Mindok for providing us with a copy of Wolves.
