Epic’s impressive demo runs on the PlayStation 5 console.
Today, Epic Games launched another Unreal Fest in Seattle, USA, during which it presents the news planned for the popular Unreal Engine 5. A major update was announced in the form of version 5.5, which is already available in preview. . This brings some interesting improvements, but by far the biggest one is a new technology called MegaLights.
Epic is pitching it as the third major technology that allows developers to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Nanite decides the amount of detail or geometry density, and Lumen, in turn, decides global illumination. MegaLights aims to improve direct lighting and shadow capabilities. Epic introduced it as part of a new technology demo.
The creators of the engine promise that thanks to MegaLights, developers will be able to add a huge number of light sources to the game, each of which casts shadows. Light can be not only static, as demonstrated by a tech demo on a large market, but also dynamic, as has been demonstrated on more than a thousand flying robots. Additionally, the entire demo ran in real time on the PlayStation 5 console.
However, it must be added that this is an experimental feature that will be gradually debugged. We’ll probably have to wait a few years for games using MegaLights.
