He dreams of returning to the old days.
Anyone who has had the chance to play Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 knows it’s an old-school game. The game’s creators aren’t trying to force a saw in their ethos. Yes, there’s an idea of honor and sacrifice, but nothing controversial. Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch apparently said it himself during the Asmongold stream: “When we signed on to make Space Marine 2, I just wanted a game that went back in time. This was a chance to work on something that was inherently old school.”
He then went on to criticize some developers’ attempts to force their opinions and moral messages on players: “I spent some time as COO at Embracer and saw games there that made me want to cry because of their exaggerated attempts to convey a message or force morality on players.”
His dream is to return to his roots: “I hope that games like Space Marine 2 and Wukong will be the beginning of a return to the times when games were just about entertainment and immersion. We just want to fight for glory and get our heart rate up a little bit. I think that’s what games should be about.”
Karch’s comments have sparked a range of reactions. Some have embraced his views, while others have been outraged. Some have even questioned whether it’s him at all. Saber Interactive has not commented on the situation, but Karch himself has not directly stated on LinkedIn that someone is impersonating him. Still, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is clearly one of those games that returns to its roots, like Black Myth: Wukong, and players love it for that, despite some critics criticizing its lack of diversity. However, as Concord shows, focusing on these aspects doesn’t always save you.
