Takashi Kiryuboss Square Enixconfirmed that next to Final Fantasy XVIwhich was mentioned earlier, did not live up to the company’s expectations, as did sales from outside Final Fantasy VII Reborn. The information comes from a recently published investor call from May, which was spotted by Eurogamer.

For its most recent fiscal year, Square Enix reported financial results that were well below expectations, even after accounting for $140 million in canceled titles. A pair of Final Fantasy games contributed to the downfall, despite the so-called HD games category, as opposed to mobile or MMO games, growing year-over-year. However, the even worse sales of Forspoken the year before can be blamed.

We don’t know the exact sales figures for either title. Final Fantasy XVI sold 3.5 million copies in its first week of release, but Kiryu had already spoken about the lack of sales in mid-August last year. Analysts estimate that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth sold around 2 million copies in its first month.

Both figures are marked by exclusive releases on PlayStation 5. Square Enix knows this and announced a shift to multiplatform strategy in the spring. Final Fantasy XVI was released on PC, and after a partnership with Microsoft, the Japanese publisher’s games should be released more often on Xbox. Something similar already happened with the MMO Final Fantasy XIV.
