Final Fantasy XVI sold 3.5 million copies in its first week of release, but Kiryu had already spoken about the lack of sales in mid-August last year. Analysts estimate that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth sold around 2 million copies in its first month.
Both figures are marked by exclusive releases on PlayStation 5. Square Enix knows this and announced a shift to multiplatform strategy in the spring. Final Fantasy XVI was released on PC, and after a partnership with Microsoft, the Japanese publisher’s games should be released more often on Xbox. Something similar already happened with the MMO Final Fantasy XIV.
