The console will apparently go into mass production and we will see its announcement soon.
With Sony seemingly set to unveil the PlayStation 5 Pro console, Nintendo appears to be gearing up to announce the long-awaited successor to the Switch hybrid device. Rumors of a new console, which we’ll tentatively call the Switch 2, have been swirling for years, and all we officially know is that it exists and will be announced sometime this fiscal year (by the end of March 2025). New information suggests it could still happen very soon.
Journalist Christopher Dring reported that there were rumors of “something” regarding the Switch 2 earlier this month, as did VGC’s Andy Robinson and presumably others. A September reveal would make sense, as per tradition in previous years, we should expect a classic Direct where Nintendo will likely focus exclusively on third-party games, as it already showed third-party games in late August.
Analyst David Gibson also predicts that the Switch 2 will be coming soon. He noted that Hosiden, the company that assembles Nintendo consoles, is investing heavily in manufacturing equipment and automation for the Nintendo product in the third quarter. Gibson estimates that we could see an announcement between September 18 and 26, ahead of Tokyo Game Show.
We also learned another interesting piece of information. Insider Nate The Hate, who is usually well-informed about Nintendo, claimed on Reddit that the console should be backwards compatible with the original Switch. This may seem obvious, but it has long been a mystery, as even the original Switch was not compatible with games from previous consoles.
As for the release date, March 2025 has been talked about for a long time. But according to the latest information, we will have to wait a little later, probably in April or May.
