He led the development of the Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma series.
Hideaki Ikuno, who worked for the Japanese company Capcom for a respectable 30 years and 5 months, said goodbye today on Twitter. He started out as a planner and then director of development for several fighting games, including, for example, Power Stone.
But he became famous mainly thanks to the Devil May Cry series, participating in all parts except the first. Towards the end of development, he took over as director of the second part and has held the same position in the third, fourth and fifth parts since 2019.
His own project was the RPG Dragon’s Dogma, originally released in 2012. This year saw the release of the second installment (our review here), which we now know was Ikuna’s last game at Capcom.
“Thank you for your long-term support of the games and characters I was responsible for,” Ikuno said in a statement on Twitter. “I hope you continue to support Capcom games and characters.”
But game development is not leaving Ikuno. Today he is leaving Capcom and tomorrow he will start working elsewhere: “Starting in September, I’ll be developing a new game in a new environment. I want to create fun, beautiful games that will be remembered as much, if not more, than the games I’ve created so far.”
Unfortunately, we still don’t know where exactly Ikuno will be heading, or whether he’ll be opening a new studio or joining an existing team. But given that he’s starting his new job tomorrow, we probably won’t have to wait long for information.
