The Chinese role-playing game is a huge success, with 3 million players playing it simultaneously.
As preparations for Tuesday’s Gamescom in Cologne were being finalized, something incredible happened in the gaming world. The release of the Chinese action RPG Black Myth: Wukong was long awaited, but no one expected the numbers that followed.
Within an hour of its release on Steam, over a million players were already playing, and the number was still growing. Today, Wukong is by far the most successful single-player game on this list. With 2.4 million concurrent players, it has far surpassed the existing Cyberpunk 2077 and even surpassed all possible popular multiplayer games such as Dota 2, Counter-Strike or this year’s hit Palworld. It is only one step away from the absolute first place, but still loses to PUBG by about 800 thousand players.
So those are the stats from SteamDB, but perhaps even more impressive are the numbers that developer Game Science themselves came up with today. As of 3pm CET today, Wukong has already sold a whopping 10 million copies, more than any Western AAA game. We also then learned that the game has 3 million players playing simultaneously across all platforms, so on PS5 that would be somewhere between half a million and a million.
It’s hard to say where this monumental success will stop, or whether it will inadvertently trigger a larger wave of premium Chinese single-player games. As we know from the data, the game has its largest player base in China, which is due not only to the studio’s origins, but also to the setting and theme of the story. According to GameDiscoverCo, almost 90% of Black Myth: Wukong players are from China.
The game is currently available on PC and PlayStation 5. An Xbox Series X|S version is also in development, but no release date has been announced yet.
