He admits that he made some mistakes.
The upcoming sequel to the Assassin’s Creed series, subtitled “Shadows”, has been the talk of the town in recent weeks, mostly due to criticism from Japanese players who objected to the portrayal and style of Jasuke via a petition. One of the two main characters in the upcoming Ubisoft game, in various materials presented as a real historical samuraiwhich, however, is at least questionable due to the lack of historical data.
The controversy surrounding Yasuke has led to the release of the statement below, in which Ubisoft representatives acknowledge that They made some mistakes in promoting the game. “While Yasuke is depicted as a samurai in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we acknowledge that this is a subject of debate and discussion,” — reads one of the fragments of the message, which is primarily intended for Japanese players.
Elsewhere in the statement, the company says it shares a passion for history and cultural heritage with fans, which is why it worked with historians, consultants, and developers at Ubisoft Japan to develop the game. It adds that the game follows the pattern of older titles. It relies primarily on creative freedom and fantasy elements. the action takes place in real historical conditions.
“Since its inception, the Assassin’s Creed series has used creative license and fantasy elements to create an immersive and exciting experience. Jasuke’s appearance in our game is an example of this. His unique and mysterious life made him the perfect candidate to tell a story against the backdrop of feudal Japan.”
With the game only a few months away from release, it’s unlikely that Ubisoft will make any significant changes to the game itself. However, it’s clear from the current statement that the publisher and the developers themselves will be more careful about how they talk about the game’s protagonist and historical background in the coming months as they promote the game. Shadows of Assassin’s Creed will be released on November 15th on PC, as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
