In our summer series, we focus on NVIDIA’s deep learning technology and how it applies to gaming and performance. In this overview, we’ll introduce two key technologies – frame generation and ray reconstruction from our colleagues at PCTuning. The full article on frame generation can be found here, and on ray reconstruction – here.

Frame generation

Frame generation is one of the main features of DLSS 3 technology, available exclusively on RTX 40 series graphics chips, which significantly improves the smoothness of games by accumulating the total number of frames. More frames per second (FPS) ensures smoother playback, which is especially important on monitors with high refresh rates.

Our Video Card Tests Gainward GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Ghost at 1440p resolution showed that enabling frame generation increased frame rates by an average of 60% across a variety of games. At the lower Full HD resolution in Alan Wake 2, the improvement is even more dramatic, up to 66%.

Reconstruction of rays

Ray tracing is a method for realistically rendering light, reflections, refractions, and shadows. With the introduction of DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction, this technology has been expanded to include artificial intelligence-powered light reconstruction, further improving in-game detail and image quality.

Testing in Alan Wake 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 shows significant differences between standard ray tracing and the DLSS ray reconstruction versions. Edges are sharper, text is more legible, and reflections on wet surfaces are more realistic. These improvements add depth to the game and improve the overall visual experience.

RTX 40 Series Performance and Potential

Testing has confirmed that frame generation and ray reconstruction technology significantly expands the potential of NVIDIA RTX 40 series graphics cards and, when combined with ultra-high resolution profiles, further increases frame rates, which is important for achieving smooth gameplay, especially at 60 frames per second.

Conclusion

NVIDIA DLSS technology, including image generation and light reconstruction, pushes the boundaries of gaming performance and image quality. With a graphics card Gainward GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER players can achieve smoother and more realistic effects in games. Both detailed articles can be found here and here.
