Last September, developers Maxis officially confirmed that they were working on a new installment of The Sims series, codenamed Project Rene. The game’s creators then announced that the upcoming sequel would be based on the free-to-play model. But current data suggests that work on The Sims 5 has been stopped. Attention was drawn to information on the LinkedIn profiles of some Maxis employees, from which references to the Rene project were removed.

One of the developers even marked the headline as cancelled, and then deleted the note after the news gradually spread. To quite significant changes was supposed to happen in the studio in April of this yearwhen some developers left Maxis entirely, while others returned to developing additional content for The Sims 4. These changes indicate that this is when EA may have paused or cancelled development of the new title.

If the news of The Sims 5’s cancellation is confirmed, it will be the second sad news for fans of the genre in a short period of time. Exactly a month ago, we accidentally learned about Life by You cancellation from Paradox, which wanted to become a competitor to The Sims.
