Mario and his gang have been doing well lately. In addition to brand new games such as Mario Wonder or Origami King in the meantime, a slew of remakes of older parts have emerged, some requiring it less than others. We got a remake of Mario vs. Donkey Kong from a 20-year-old handheld or a remake of Mario RPG that is already 28 years old. But then we also had a fairly quick re-release called New Super Mario Bros. and Mario 3D world. That’s why fans were thrilled when Nintendo announced that it was working on a remake of the most popular entry in the Paper Mario series, that is, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Although at first glance it may seem that this is a 1:1 conversion and asking 60 euros for a port is a bit too high, we were pleasantly mistaken. This remake will take you back to golden age GameCube, but spice it up a lot of changes.
Let’s first look at this from the perspective of the game itself, regardless of the remake. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is the second installment in the series, released in 2004. It took the best of Paper Mario 64 and created a truly amazing game with great humor, gameplay And soundtrack. In this job, in addition to the typical rescue of Princess Peach, you will go in search of a mythical city that seems to have sunk centuries ago and built a new city called Rogueportin which you will spend most of the game.
In terms of core gameplay, it is an adventure RPG with a lot of funny dialogue And great puzzles. You’ll spend most of your time in turn-based combat, which is designed to theatrical performance. You are on stage with your opponent and the audience is watching you. Depending on how interesting your attacks are, spectators can cheer you on and award points for one big powerful attack. Or several of them may rise up and wreak havoc on the stage for both you and the enemy. You always have one of several with you partners, each of which has its own unique attack abilities. As you progress through the story, you will encounter more of these power-ups and can switch between them at any time. In the world outside of combat, each of them even plays an important role in opening secret paths. In the original, you had to pause the game and choose someone else. In the remake, just hold down one button!
But the combat system is not only what I described a minute ago. She has amazing depth, which I’d like to leave partly to the player’s discretion. For example, you can block in two different ways, and with the right button press timing you can chain one attack countless times so you only spend one action and deal a lot of damage. Different enemies have different weaknesses, which you discover either through trial and error or through the abilities of one of your partners.
