Due to the relatively significant delay in financial results for the entire 2023, it so happened that in a month we have the next results of the Finnish company Remedy, specifically for the first quarter of 2024, that is, from January to March. However, you can find some interesting information here.
Remedy continues to work on support for Survival Horror Alan Wake 2, promising more updates and, of course, the announced Night Springs and Lakehouse DLCs. Press instructions during the review originally said the first expansion would release sometime in late spring, but now Remedy CEO Tero Virtala said on a video conference that he couldn’t talk about any dates. Looks like we’ll see that later.
In addition, 4 projects are still being developed in the Finnish studio. At its most advanced stage of development is a project codenamed Condor (final title probably FBC: Firebreak), which is a multiplayer spin-off of Control. Full-scale production began at the end of March and is thus in the last major development stage before release. It seems that Condor could be the first of all 4 projects to be released, but when this will happen is still unclear. Either way, Virtala says in a press release that recent internal playtests have been very positive, claiming that the gameplay is fun and that Remedy is bringing unique elements to the genre.
In addition to the spin-off, a full-fledged sequel to Control is also in development, which is gradually completing the concept development phase, with the world, game mechanics and visual goals already being tested. The project is expected to enter the production-ready phase in the second quarter (i.e. by the end of June), which is the last step before full production.
The fact that Remedy bought full rights to the Control brand from 505 Games in February is tied to both of those projects, and it’s unclear what they’ll do with them. Options include finding a new partner and self-publishing.
The third project is remakes of the first and second volumes of Max Payne, which will be published by Rockstar, which also owns the rights to the entire brand. The game is currently in production readiness, but full production should be released in the second quarter. The project budget is similar to Alan Wake 2.
The latest game is a project codenamed Kestrel, which is being developed in collaboration with Tencent and is still in the concept stage. The project was originally called Vanguard and was supposed to be a free-to-play game, but late last year it was relaunched as a premium game (though still multiplayer) called Kestrel. It is also worth noting that China’s Tencent recently increased its stake in Remedy from 5% to 14.8% shares.
Finally, a short word about the Remedy management, which changed a little a few days ago. Chief Operating Officer Christophen Schmitz will leave the company at the end of May, and Remedy is not yet looking for a replacement and will split Schimtz’s tasks among several positions. In addition, Control and Control 2 game director Mikael Kasurinen was promoted to the position of creative director of the studio, moving him to the side of the famous Sam Lake.
