He’s on his way now another Czech indie game, this time focusing on turn-based combat. In addition to procedurally generated and fully destructible environments, you will also find over 40 different weapons that can be upgraded and their final effect customized. A student is behind a sci-fi thriller set on different planets. Jakub Tomshuwhich has already released several games on the platform itch.io.
“Exactly. I’m a student and I’m finishing my studies this year. At the same time, I also have a part-time job, but Over the past month or so I’ve taken a break and dedicated myself full-time to Solar Storm.. All the other games I made in my spare time, so this is nothing new. I really enjoy programming and developing games, so this is not a problem for me.”
So, have you chosen the field of game development?
“I am studying information technology in electrical engineering school because I am not only interested in game development, but also in software development, hardware development, etc. Apart from games, I am also involved in game engine development and 3D graphics rendering. so I’m happy with the broader focus :).”
Where did your inspiration come from? During the game I couldn’t help it I remember the original Wormsbut I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of abilities such as teleportation of a tank across the terrain, By the way, she surprised me with her opponent at first. Do you plan to continue developing the game after release or do you want to move on to another project?
“My first inspiration was the game Scorched Earth 1991, which was one of the first games in this genre. I first learned about it from a friend who is interested in retro gaming. We played it with a few people via DOSBox and it was great. I was surprised how such an old and simple game could be so fun. A few years ago I also tried wormswhich is also a cult classic, but basically it was inspiration and I wanted to add new gameplay mechanics to the game that would change the way the game plays out.
The main two innovations include teleportation and “projectile modes” (explosive, ricochet, piercing) are mentioned. Teleportation came about because I needed to give players the ability to move, but given that I programmed my own physics enginemaking a teleportation projectile was easier than a traditional move like in Worms.
Initially, projectile mods were fixed for each weapon, but then I wanted to add one weapon with multiple mods and thought the player could simply choose which mod they wanted to use each turn. This added another layer of strategy and thus created interesting moments when the player is attacked by an unexpected combination of weapons, mods, and power-ups.
I plan to support Solar Storm even after release. I already have some ideas for the first content update. I’d definitely like to move on to some other project, but I’ll definitely take the time to fix any bugs in Solar Storm.”
